4 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Repair Your Roof Yourself

It’s very easy to climb a ladder yourself to see what’s causing roof leakages, gutter issues, and even to maintain the top of your building. However, many homeowners have faced many problems in doing so, which is why it should be avoided at all costs. If you’re thinking about getting your ladder out to conduct even the simplest of tasks on your roof, have a look at some of the reasons why you shouldn’t and why you should leave it to the professionals instead.

1. It’s a Dangerous Job

Roofing is one of the most dangerous jobs around. Not only will you be working at height, but you’ll also likely be nervous in doing so, which could cause a host of other problems. Professional roofing contractors work at height on a daily basis – they are confident in everything they do and they have all the professional equipment to ensure they are safe at all times – you, however, probably do not. Hire a professional to undertake the work on your roof and you’ll stay safe along with your roof.

Falls from height are one of the UK’s most prevalent accidents. In the UK workforce, falls from height accounted for 26% of all fatal injuries and each year, more than 400k people die around the world because they fell. Most roofs are several metres off the ground, which maximises your chances of sustaining a serious injury. If you broke your back trying to fix a loose tile, not only could you end up paralysed, but your family would be affected too. It’s really not worth the risk – hire a professional instead!

2. It Might Not Be Cost-Effective

Granted, you could complete the job yourself and save yourself a few hundred quid, but the time you’ve spent on your roof and the money you’ve spent on equipment to ensure you’re safe and materials to complete the job might not be as cost-effective as hiring a professional. Professionals already have the materials and equipment needed to complete most basic roof repairs, so all you need to do is pay them for their time.

3. You Might Not Get the Professional Finish You Desire

Professional roof repairs like Belfast Roofing Services will be able to get the finish you desire. However, there’s a chance you won’t if you try to DIY. It could be the easiest job in the world to undertake, but there’s a lot to think about when it comes to roofing repairs and maintenance in general. If you wanted to replace a tile and ended up breaking another one during your efforts, you’re just going to end up causing more problems than it’s worth. Ultimately, you may not get the finish you were expecting, and it could end up looking worse than before.

4. Further Roofing Problems

As stated above, you might not get the finish you desire visually if conducting the work yourself. However, you could end up causing even more problems than your roof already has. Breaking tiles or even causing batten damage could have a severe impact on how your roof works. Not navigating around your roof the professional way could cause leaks and other major damage that could lead to even more problems in your home internally.

It’s all too easy to cause damage to tiles and slates when you try and navigate a roof. In addition, being careless when you lean a ladder to gain access to the roof could lead to a broken window or damaged gutter.

Typically speaking, most roofing repairs are basic jobs, but it doesn’t matter how basic they are – you’re not going to be able to get the same finish that a professional will be able to provide. Roofing is also very dangerous and requires plenty of training to become a professional. In conclusion, if you’re looking to maintain your roof yourself, don’t do it and hire a professional instead.

Ask around for recommendations if you need a roofer to do some work for you. Check to see if any of your neighbours have had their roof fixed or replaced recently and see if they were happy with the result. Remember, this is a job you should try and get done on the cheap!

Our roof has a few missing shingles, and my brother suggested that we replace them ourselves next weekend. I’m glad you said homeowners should not attempt to repair their roof themselves since it could cause further damage to their roof and jeopardize their safety. Because of that, I’ll tell my brother that I would just hire a roof repair contractor in town to do the job. Thanks!
