lifeIt comes to us all eventually that massive two-digit number that signifies that we've reached something of a mid-way point on the journey of life. Obviously there are many ways that you can approach this figurative milestone and from throwing a massive party to making some very odd decisions, there are plenty of 40-yr-olds that will tell you a tale or two.

But, what can we do before we hit the big 4 oh? There are only so many opportunities to live our life to the max and make hay whilst the proverbial sun shines. Health, relationships, children will all be thrown in our way before we knock up 4 decades on the planet and if you're scratching your slightly thinning head in search of things to do then read on.

This is your chance to make things happen and do something amazing while you still can so, what are you waiting for? Check out the top five things to do before you're 40 list below and go and have the time of your life - you virile young go getter you - grrrr.

Learn a language

Ok, so this may not seem to be one of the most amazing things on the earth but I can guarantee that if you've learned a second language before you're 40 then you'll certainly have achieved something that not many other people have. Being able to speak, listen and learn about other cultures is one of the most rewarding experiences on the planet and from French and Spanish to Mandarin and Russian, the whole world is waiting so there's no time like the present.

Fall in love

If you've never woken up in the middle of the night with a dull ache in the pit of your stomach and an image of another person in your mind then you've never truly been in love. The highs and the lows of falling head over hills should not be taken lightly and it's worth pointing out, for health reasons, that getting your heart broken before you're 40 is completely advisable. Of course, true love may win through and you'll get to spend the rest of your lives together, who knows, but one thing is for sure you need to get out there and start rolling the love dice.

Do something amazing

If you consider getting out of bed before 8am on a weekend is pretty amazing then it may surprise you to learn that there are some pretty spectacular challenges out there that will leave you feeling incredible about yourself and the world. Running a marathon, doing a stand-up-comedy course or helping out at the local youth club are all amazing things to do before you're 40 and if you get the chance to get sponsored or just to help other people then take it because life's too short to look back and wonder, what if.

Have an adventure

Not only does approaching 40 mean that you're reaching middle age it also means that the opportunities to go on your adventure holidays are starting to dwindle too. Having kids, compromising with a partner or just not having the funds are all great excuses not to do something adventurous away from home but if you can squeeze in one last trip before it's too late then you certainly won't regret it. Asia, South America and Australia are packed-full of adventurous locations and activities so, get involved and sign-up before you get tied down and out of the adventure race.

Congratulate your folks

Aside from thinking about just YOU, why not consider your mum and dad for a second. Their little boy or girl is turning 40! What a massive point in their lives too and if you're close to your folks or even if you're not, taking them out to celebrate the passing of time will be really worthwhile for all of you. This is your chance to pay for a meal, treat them to a weekend away or just spend some quality time reminiscing together because being 40 is not just about how you feel it's about everyone around you too.

Chris has just turned 40 and still has lots to achieve even though he's been slightly hampered with a wife and 2 kids!
