Glancing Into a Five-Star Future: The Most Exciting 5G Phones Expected in 2019

There’s no doubt that everyone is looking forward to the arrival of 5G connectivity: a level of network coverage that’s forecast to perform 20 times faster than the 4G connection we have at the moment. It’s also thought that users will be able to stream videos in 4K and make high-definition video calls – allowing us to connect with each other and share content quicker and easier than ever. 5G also brings benefits for the growing industry of mobile gaming due to its lower latency which can be optimised to process a very high volume of data with minimal delay.

How 5G works

Wireless networks are composed of cell sites which are divided into sectors. These sectors send data through radio waves to mobile devices. the foundation to 5G is provided by Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and Fourth-generation (4G) wireless technology. 5G wireless signals unlike 4G, which requires large, high-power cell towers to provide signals in long distances, will be transmitted via large numbers of small cell stations located in places like light poles or building roofs.

However, one of the downsides to 5G is that we won’t simply be able to turn our phones on one day and use it, because we have to wait until both network providers and our smartphone can connect and support 5G connectivity. Because of this, many mobile phones users are left wondering whether or not to buy a 5G ready phone now and wait for the networks to catch up later, OR choose a network that promises to support 5G connectivity earlier and wait to buy the hardware once it’s ready.

As mobile hardware begins to make progress towards 5G connectivity – accelerating the smartphone market in turn – there is still no indication as to when networks will catch up with the phones to offer 5G to customers. As it stands, it is believed that there will be no 5G until the service is widely available in 2020.

Some network providers are offering 5G but with clauses. For example, EE promises to launch 5G for users of the OnePlus 5G once coverage is available, while the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G has pledged to hit stores in the second half of 2019 across 16 UK cities. The downside, however, is that if you’re an EE customer and you don’t purchase one of the specified handsets, you won’t be able to use 5G in 2019 regardless of whether your location offers coverage. Vodafone has also announced its plans to roll out 5G connectivity to customers, with 19 cities currently listed to play host to the advanced technology.

Like in many cases when the new tech arrives on the market, 5G will only be supported by expensive top-range handsets, and if users are not willing to pay for it, they will have to wait until it gradually filters down to more mid-priced handsets and eventually budget phones, as in the case of 4G.

But for those who want to take the giant leap to 5G, here’s a list of the top 5G phones that are set to arrive in the coming months:

1. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G

Xiaomi announced its first 5G phone and said it would go on sale in May 2019 alongside Snapdragon 855 and X50 modem which is thought to be available in Onyx Black and Sapphire Blue. The phone hides the impressive twin 24Mp and 2Mp selfie cameras behind the screen where it can achieve an incredible 93.4% screen-to-body ratio. It also includes all the latest hardware you’d expect with wireless charging supported.

2. Samsung Galaxy S10 5G

The Galaxy S10 5G is merely a larger version of the Galaxy S10 but with added 5G support. However, it also adds an extra 12Mp camera lens at the rear resulting in a quad-lens setup. The handset’s battery is even higher in capacity at 4,500mAh. A 6.7in Quad-HD+ Dynamic AMOLED Infinity-O screen makes this phone the largest Samsung phone to date. The S10 5G shares identical core hardware as the rest of the range, with an Exynos 9820 or Snapdragon 855 processor, but also boasts a fixed 8GB of RAM and 256GB of non-expandable storage.

3. OnePlus 5G

The OnePlus 5G phone screen appears to be a 21:9 panel. OnePlus has confirmed it’s 5G phone will run the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor with an X50 modem, and that it will arrive before the end of May 2019. EE has already confirmed that it will be stocking the model in the UK.

4. LG V50 ThinQ 5G

The LG V50 packs a whopping 4,000mAh battery and is fitted with a 6.4in 19.5:9 Quad-HD+ display. LG’s 5G support is provided by 2019’s processor of choice: the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with X50 modem. This processing power is paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage on the V50 as standard.

Audio is a particularly outstanding facet for LG models, and the V50 ThinQ 5G offers the best-wired sound of any smartphone in its range thanks to the high-quality DAC. The phone’s photography capabilities are also noteworthy; with a triple-lens (16Mp + 12Mp + 12Mp) set up at the rear, and dual-lens (8Mp + 5Mp) nestled in the front.
