How to Deal with Sensitive Skin

shaving Sensitive SkinIt seems that for every little step that we make towards the better understanding of the world around us, we change it to that extent that we have to keep relearning the rules. While we are constantly improving our knowledge when it comes to medicine, for instance, we are also daily creating new pollutants, necessitating new research. So while we don't have to deal with the same issues like our ancestors did, we have our own new set of problems, and we have to keep learning how to deal with them. While sensitive skin is by no means a new problem, it is made more complex by the variety of possible causes. That's why we decided to offer a short overview of what is it that you can do to make the condition as harmless as possible.

Take Care when Washing

Even though it might seem reasonable that more frequent showers could help you sensitive skin, the matter is not exactly as simple. Showering too frequently, especially with hot water results in the removal of the protective oils from your skin, which leaves it exposed to outside agents that lead to irritation. That's why you should shower with warm or even cold water, and do so only as frequently as you need to.

Be Careful When Choosing Skin Products

First of all, avoid anything that contains alcohol, from hand sanitizers to deodorants. Speaking of which, limiting your alcohol consumption should also help with your skin issues. While there are many products out there that claim to be suitable for sensitive skin, don't simply take their word for it, and make sure to carefully check the list of ingredients. You can easily find recommendations online, just be careful, even though someone else may have had a great experience with a particular ingredient, that doesn't mean that it'll suit you as well.

If you are unsure about a particular product or the ingredients it contains, you might want to consider running a patch test. Dabble a bit of the product in question on a small patch of skin, that you can conceal should the product turn out to cause irritation, and wait for at least a couple of days before making the final judgment on the product.

Switch to Organic Clothing

Apart from the products you are using, the thing that has most contact with your skin is definitely the clothing that you wear. Substances found in the clothes get absorbed by your pores, especially if you are a heavy sweater, so ensure that your clothes are as toxin free as possible. While typical clothing comes with a host of potentially harmful substances, organic clothing is required to have been produced from completely natural materials, in processes that don't necessitate the use of toxic chemicals. This includes everything from pesticides to artificial fabric dyes. That's why switching from your typical one to a natural hemp shirt could make a world of difference when it comes to the health of your skin.

Mind Your Habits

Apart from addressing specific issues, like choosing skin product with care and buying organic clothing, you should also think about your overall health, and what you are doing to protect it. Your diet, for instance plays a significant part in the condition and sensitivity of your skin. You should make sure that you are consuming enough food that is rich in antioxidants, and that doesn't promote inflammation. That is to say broccoli yes, spicy foods no.

Likewise, your sleeping habits and the amount of stress that you are exposed to can really play an important role when it comes to skin sensitivity. Naturally, most people wouldn't mind reducing their stress levels or sorting out their sleeping schedule for reasons that have nothing to do with skin issues, but that's not always such an easy task to achieve. Even so, you should try and do your best to always get a good night's sleep and keep annoyances at a minimum.
