The Basic Steps to Building and Email List from Scratch [Infographic]

frtgrtwgrtwIn this article, we are going to talk about how you can create an email list starting from scratch.

If you are planning to sell anything online, your email list is going to be your number one asset. It is going to be the list of people who’ve raised their hands and expressed an interest. These are people that you can promote your own products to, or other people’s products to. It’s never too early to start building your email list from scratch.

How do you get started?

First of all, you, are going to need some type of email list management software. This is the software that will automate people joining your list and enable you to send emails to them. If you check out something like MailChimp, you can actually get that service for free for the first 2,000 subscribers. At Capterra, you may check the most popular email list management software in 2017.

Once you’ve got signed up with your email list service provider, the next thing you’re going to need to do is give people a reason to join your list. It’s not enough to say to people “can I send you emails?” You’re going to give them a reason to raise their hands and join your list. The best way to do that is something that we call a lead magnet.

A lead magnet

A lead magnet is a piece of content that solves the specific problem, that answers a specific question, gives people a taste of the value that you can offer, and is actually a really juicy reason for them to sign up, to join your email list.

Especially when you’re starting from scratch, you do what you can with what you got from where you are. There are probably many possibilities that you already have to create opportunities to invite people to join your email list.

Let’s start with doing an audit of any of your online pages. In this, we include any social media that you might be a member of – like a Facebook or Twitter page – but also any existing website that you have. Now you should to go and look at all of those pages. A way to do this is to google yourself and ask yourself on each of these pages: “am I inviting people to the next step am I giving people an opportunity to join my list?”, “do I have some type of lead capture?”

There are interesting things you can do, such as you can use lead magnet pop up, so that you can invite people to join your list.

First of all look at the online presence that you already have. Next, look at any email you send, add to your email signature and invitations to people to come get your lead magnet and join your list. So that’s something you can set it and you don’t need to worry about it any longer. With every email you send, you’re inviting people to join your email list. In this article, for example, Fred Harrington describes how to build a mailing list in WordPress.

Now let’s go offline. First of all, friends and family. Ask them to help, ask them if they would be willing to help you spread the word that you’ve created this new lead magnet and invite people.

Finally, look at if you are currently doing any type of business you have any type of physical marketing like brochures or business cards. Make sure that you add to that a call-to-action, an invitation for people to come to your web page, download your lead magnet, and join your list that way.

We’ve just covered four or five things that you can do right now to start growing your email list and when you put these into action, you’re going to see a snowball effect and you’re really going to get going creating your most important online that asset – which is your email list.
