How to prepare your home for sale

With so many homes on the market, there is an abundance of choice for those that are buying. It is, therefore, important that you take the sale of yours seriously and do all that you can to get the best possible price for it regardless of whether you are looking to move upwards, sideways, or downsize your home.

Repair and repaint

Ok, so you may feel that you can not be bothered to repair any of the damage within your home or repaint it for that matter; you are moving, so let the new owners do the work. Well, the sad fact is that if you have this kind of mentality towards your home sale, then you probably won’t sell it, or it will go for way less than you could actually get for it.

By repairing any areas that require attention, any potential buyer will get the notion that your home has been well cared for and is unlikely to fall down around their ears if they choose to move into it. Whereas, if you leave the repair work for all to see, any potential buyer is more than likely going to turn tail and flee; if you haven’t looked after and repaired the obvious, what does the unseen look like.

When it comes to repainting, it is generally more to give the walls and any painted woodwork a clean and well cared for look. Nobody wants to buy a house with marks all down the walls or discolored woodwork.

Declutter

It is a really good idea to declutter your home when you are thinking of selling it. As well as the mental benefits for you, this is so that potential buyers can see the true potential of what is on offer, and they should be able to visualize their own items of furniture within your home. Over cluttered homes can look small, dark, and messy, although it is a good idea not to go too sparse as this can make your home feel cold, empty, and unlived in. Like a home for sale in Tennessee, before the seller include it on the list of property for sale they first decide to declutter the things that should be taken out little by little.

One way to make sure that you are happy with the amount you have on display without stripping your home completely is to hire a container service such as BlueBox Storage which will deliver a storage container to you for you to fill at your leisure, you will then be able to pack your items ready for your move while you declutter, and if you feel that you have decluttered too much, you can then unpack the necessary items to make your home feel like a home.

Another good thing about using a service such as the one BlueBox Storage offers is that they will, when you are ready, collect your storage container and deliver it to your new address so that you can unpack it at your leisure into your new home.

Get cleaning

It is important to make sure that your home is spotlessly clean before opening it up for viewing. If you do not feel that you have the time or the energy to give your current home a thorough deep clean, then the best step is to get the professional home cleaners in. They will be able to clean and polish hardwood floorings, shampoo carpets, as well as do any other cleaning services you ask of them.

This will get rid of any unpleasant odors that are filling your home, which you may not be able to smell yourself. This is incredibly true when you have animals living in your home with you. You will find that because you live with them, you can not smell their odors like those from outside the household can. This is also true if you have smokers within your home. The smell of nicotine sticks to everything, and although smokers cannot smell it, non-smokers will not only smell it but see the evidence on paintwork and wall coverings.

Tidy your garden

You may not have to do too much in your garden; it all depends on how well kept you keep it or if it is just a point of mowing the lawn and putting the kid’s bikes in the shed. However, you may find that having a few flowers around your front door brightens the approach and draws the eye toward the front door.

It is important to make sure that your porch area is well swept and that there aren’t any cobwebs visible. Repair or repaint any area of your front door that looks a little bit tired and ensure that the front doorbell works.

Deadhead any flowers, and keep the edging of your lawn clean-cut for extra definition. If you feel that your garden really lets your home down, it may be beneficial for you to hire the services of a professional gardener to at least get it so that it is manageable for you.
