How to Craft a CV That Works Internationally

employment_applicationIf you are looking for a job abroad, then you will need to make sure that it is appealing to people from different countries and cultures. It is always wise to change a CV for every job that you are applying for anyway, but there are things that you should be aware of when you are sending your CV abroad.

  • Language
You may need to present your CV in a different language if you are applying or a job abroad. If you can speak that language then this should not be a problem for you. It may be sensible to submit copies in two languages if you are applying for an English speaking job in a non-English speaking country.
Even if you are applying for a job in a country which has the same language as yours, you need to be aware of certain words that may have different meanings. If you know someone living in that country, then it can be a good idea to ask them to take a look at your CV so that they can check.
  • Phrases
There are certain phrases which are specific to certain countries or even to certain parts of a country. It is important to try to avoid using these in your CV. You may not even realise that you are using them and so it is wise to have someone who lives in a different part of your country to take a look.
  • Layout
There may be a difference in the way CV's tend to be laid out in different countries. It is worth taking a look at some sample CV's from the country that you are applying to, in order to find out. There may be small differences, like the way they set out names and dates of birth of larger ones, like the way qualifications are listed. It is a good idea to follow the typical format that is used in that country so that it makes it easier for the potential employer to read and follow it.
  • Content
Different countries may actually want different things included in the CV's of their applicants. In order to find out, you should be able to find websites aimed at residents of that country on how to write a CV. This should let you know everything that needs to be in there. It is worth trying to find a selection of sites, just to check whether the content on them is correct.
If you are looking for a job abroad, then it is important to spend a lot of time researching how to get your CV to work. Yours will stand out if it is different from the rest of the applicants and this could be a bad thing. If you do not have all of the information that they need on there or it is laid out in way they are not used so they cannot find it, then this will reduce your chances of getting the job. Language is also important as you need to make sure that they understand it all and that the words and phrases you use are appropriate. Make sure they mean what you intend them to mean.
