Why Your AC Isn’t Blowing Cold, and Other AC Repair Answers

The state of Texas is by definition a warm place, with temperatures in summer reaching up to 40 Celsius degrees. For this reason, homeowners and business owners in Texas don’t like to face the need for AC repair, but it’s vital that your home, office, storefront, or other such structure have a functioning air conditioner at all times. Texas heat is not just uncomfortable, it can be downright unhealthy and damage interior surface materials, houseplants, and the like.

While only an AC repair contractor can diagnose any issues with your home’s air conditioner, furnace, air filtration system, and other features, you might note some basic issues many homeowners have with their HVAC system. This information can alert you to minor fixes you might make on your own or help you know what you might expect by way of needed AC repairs in Cypress TX.

AC Repair in Cypress When the Unit Is Not Blowing Cold

If your home’s air conditioner cycles on but doesn’t blow cold air, the problem might be as simple as a clogged furnace filter. Air conditioners push air through that filter and then through the ducts in the home; if the filter is clogged, this slows down the flow of air and warms it as well. Dirty ductwork in the home also tends to warm forced air as it flows throughout the house.

In some cases, your home’s thermostat might need recalibrating or replacing, or the home might need new wiring between the air conditioner and the thermostat. If the thermostat or wiring are failing, the air conditioner compressor might cycle off sooner than it should so that you don’t feel cool air circulating through the home.

Leaking refrigerant from a damaged compressor also means no cool air throughout the house! An air conditioning contractor in Texas can make repairs and then recharge the refrigerant as needed, for sufficient cooling in every room.

Do You Need AC Repair If the House is Cold and Clammy?

In some cases, your home might be sufficiently cool but still feel humid or downright clammy. A cold and clammy feeling often indicates that the air conditioner is actually oversized or too powerful for the home! Air conditioners remove humidity as well as heat; if the AC is oversized, it might lower the home’s interior temperatures and then cycle off too quickly, before it can remove humidity.

Adjusting the vents in rooms can sometimes address this problem; close those vents just a small bit and note if that helps improve the situation; continue to close them a slight bit more every day until they’re just about a quarter of the way open. This slows down the airflow into each room so the AC has more time to remove humidity.

In some cases, you might also have too much humidity in the home for the AC to manage. If you boil lots of water on the stovetop, take long and steamy showers, or have clogged roof vents that allow humidity to get trapped in the home’s upper levels, the air conditioner might not be strong enough to remove that humidity no matter its size or power! Whatever the case, call an air conditioner repair contractor for a full AC inspection and needed adjustments or replacement.

Do You Need New AC Installation in Cypress for Uneven Cooling?

Uneven cooling throughout a home is not uncommon. In some cases, this is the result of poor-quality insulation in some rooms versus others, and especially in rooms exposed to lots of sunlight. Those rooms are just going to be more difficult to cool, and the home’s air conditioner cycles on and off according to the reading of the thermostat, not the temperature of every room of the house!

However, a worn motor and blower might mean uneven cooling throughout the house and especially for rooms far from the AC compressor. A failing motor might not power the blower as it should, and a worn blower might provide insufficient cooling throughout the house.

In other cases, your home’s air conditioner might be undersized or underpowered for the home. If the air conditioner is not powerful enough to push air throughout all the ducts of the house, some rooms will simply never reach your desired temperature. In those cases, a new AC installation for a Cypress home ensures proper cooling throughout its interior.

How Often Do You Recharge Refrigerant of an Air Conditioner?

One common misconception about air conditioners is that the refrigerant in the compressor gets “used up,” evaporates, or somehow burns off over time. This is not accurate, as refrigerant circulates through a fully contained coil or hose inside the compressor and is never depleted.

The only instance when your air conditioner needs a refrigerant recharge is if damage to the compressor allowed for a refrigerant leak. In that case, an air conditioning contractor needs to perform repairs and then recharge the refrigerant, as said.

Is AC Maintenance in Cypress Worth the Cost?

One of the best ways to maintain your home’s air conditioner is to invest in needed AC maintenance. Air conditioning maintenance typically includes cleaning the compressor grilles as well as the parts inside the compressor housing, checking and oiling the bearings and other moving parts as needed, and checking the compressor’s operating temperature.

Air conditioner maintenance in Cypress might also include a check of the home’s wiring and thermostat, and a recalibration as needed. Drain hoses are also checked for damage and cleaned as needed. An air conditioning company in Cypress might also check the home’s furnace, air filter, and other connected appliances for damage and needed repairs.

Regular maintenance is an excellent way to avoid otherwise unnecessary AC repair, and can even extend the lifespan of your home’s air conditioner and HVAC system. The AC might even run more efficiently, lowering your utility bills throughout the year. For all these reasons, consider regular AC maintenance for your home as needed.

Thanks for informing me that if my air conditioning unit is not blowing cold air, it most likely needs its thermostat to be recalibrated or replaced. However, it could also be simply caused by a clogged, dirty filter. My husband has noticed the other day that the AC in our entertainment room is blowing warm air. Perhaps I should call an air conditioning repair service this weekend to have an expert check it out. Hopefully, it wouldn’t need a costly repair.
