How to Stay Cool in Summer

Hot-SummerSummer is coming and for most people that means hot weather is also on its way. Whether you enjoy hot weather or not, you probably will look for ways to stay cool during the summer. Here are six ways to beat the heat and stay cool this summer.

1. Turn Off Unnecessary Appliances

The first thing you should turn off is your lights. Lights are one of the primary energy sources that produce heat in your home; they should be turned off whenever possible. Keep in mind that other appliances such as your oven, microwave and television all emit heat as well. Keep appliance use to a minimum to keep your house feeling cooler over the summer. You can also consider buying a grill and cooking outside to keep your home cooler.

2. Turn Your Air Conditioner or Fans On

Obviously, if you have an air conditioning unit, keeping it on will keep you cool. Make sure that your filter is clean and that you replace it every three to four months. It's also a good idea to turn on any other fans you have. Fans help circulate the air and make the house feel cooler. Regardless if you have an air conditioner or not, fans are an inexpensive way to keep your home cooler.

3. Close Your Blinds

Simply closing your blinds or curtains is a great way to keep the room feeling cooler. If your blinds are white or light colored, they are better at keeping heat out. On the other hand, if your blinds are a dark color they will absorb heat and make your home warmer. Consider changing your blinds for the summer to make sure your home stays as cool as possible.

4. Stay Hydrated

Keeping cool in the summer, means you need to make sure that you are staying hydrated. Drink at least eight glasses of water throughout the day even if you don't "feel" thirsty. Dehydration can sneak up on you, especially in the summertime when you need more water. One tip is to keep bottles of water in your freezer. When you are ready to go somewhere, grab one or two and you will have cold water available for you. Also, keep in mind that caffeine and alcohol dehydrate your body, so avoid these types of beverages during the hot days of summer.

5. Take Cool Showers

Taking a cool shower or two throughout the day will definitely help cool you off during the summer. Make them cold and keep them short so you will save water and electricity.

In addition, using cool water for your showers will keep the air in your home cooler than if you used warm water.

6. Go Swimming

There is nothing that cools you off like a good swim during a hot day. Grab some friends, unleash your inner child and go swimming. Head to your local pool, lake, or river; just make sure to wear your sunscreen and have fun!
