5 Ways to Prevent Varicose Veins (Spider Veins)

varicose veinsVaricose veins are not dangerous, but they are also not the pretty things to look at – Varicose veins (also known as Spider veins) are enlarged red or blue blood vessels that live close to the skin’s surface and often form a branching or web-like pattern on the skin. More often than not, they appear on the face, thighs and calves, but can also appear anywhere on the body depending on you blood vessels. Spider veins usually appear due to hormonal changes, being sedentary, obesity, and sometimes excessive sun exposure. Sometimes spider veins are not always preventable and may be a family trait however, there are some things you can do to try and avoid getting them or getting to many of them.

  1. Protect yourself from the sun – When you plan to spend an extended period outside, ensure to put on sunscreen. Sunscreen is not only good to help protect your skin from skin cancer but it also helps to prevent against spider veins. Even if you are only going outside for 30 minutes, put sunscreen on, it only takes a few seconds to apply and could be a game changer in preventing spider veins.
  2. Get good footwear – If you are a female, try to now wear high-heels to often. Try to wear low-heeled shoes if possible as they help to promote good blood flow. Apart from high-heels, also try to avoid wearing tight clothes that constrict you at the waist or your groin area as these can cause blood to stay stagnant which could cause a backup of blood and will enlarge your veins causing varicose veins. Compression socks or stockings are a good thing to invest in as they help to circulate your blood back to your heart.
  3. Watch how you site – If you sit with your legs crossed for an extended period of time this could slow down your blood flow in your legs and could cause blood vessel damage. If your blood vessels become damaged then this could lead to the vein valves and walls opening which helps to contribute to spider and varicose veins.
  4. Don’t sit down for too long – If you have been sitting for prolonged periods of time ensure to get up and walk around. Don’t be stagnant for too long. If you have to stand or sit, get up and shift your weight back and forth between each leg every few minutes in order to keep your blood flowing. Try not to go for 30 minutes without standing up and going for a short walk to get the blood flow going again. Constant movement helps to promote blood circulation which in turn helps to prevent varicose veins.
  5. Put your feet up – When your at home laying on your couch or in your chair, ensure to elevate your feet. By putting up your feet and elevating them you are helping to take the pressure off of your legs. With you legs elevated, it also helps to drain blood back to your heart. With having your blood flowing back to your heart, this will decrease the amount of pressure on the blood vessels and the veins in your legs and will allow them to continue to be strong and not produce any varicose veins.

Although varicose veins do not pose any health complications, they are sometimes unsightly to see. If you take all the proper precautions you may be able to save your body from them. However sometimes, even if you follow these prevention tips, you may still get them are it could just be a genetic trait that has to do with your blood or your vessels but using these tips could be the difference of you getting a few instead of a bunch of them.
