Ring Rolled Forging: Applications and Advantages

Ring rolled forgings are used in various industrial machineries, where components that possess high strength are required. These forgings have replaced many other age old products like castings and fabrications due to the advantages they offer. This article takes a look at the important industries where rolled rings are used and their advantages over time tested components.

Ring rolled forging is the process in which a metal bar's thickness is reduced and its length is increased. This process involves use of two rolls which are either cylindrical or semi cylindrical in shape. These rolls have grooves of varying shapes. The bar is heated and then inserted into the rolls. When the bar stops inside the roll, it starts rotating and the bar is shaped according to the shape of the groove. This process is repeated with the same roll or the bar is transferred into a roll with a different groove according to the requirement. This process is carried out until the required shape for the roll ring is achieved. These forgings are used in various products like axle, rings for bearings, leaf springs, tapered levers etc.

These forgings are used in various industries and play a significant role in machineries that require high strength components. These are mainly used in the industries where good performance of the machinery is very important to produce high quality products that have perfect design and function most efficiently. These rolled rings are used in many important industries all over the world a few of which are given below:

  1. Nuclear Industry
  2. Aircraft Engine Manufacturing Industry
  3. Machine shops
  4. Oil and Gas Suppliers
  5. Petrochemical Industries
  6. Food Processing Machines
  7. Gear Industry
  8. Valve Industry
  9. Pharmaceutical Companies
  10. Metal Service Centers
  11. Defense Departments

All these industries make use of these forgings for their machinery because the proper functioning of their machinery depends upon these forgings and the quality of the product depends on the machine's function.

Earlier companies made use of castings, fabrications, machined plates, powder metal parts and reinforced plastics for similar processes but ring rolled forgings have replaced all these components in many of the companies due to the advantages that these have over the traditional components. Here we take a look at the advantages of forgings:

Strength: In comparison to the castings and other components, forgings are stronger as they retain their strength even when there is high fluctuation in temperature.

Reliable and Economical: Since rolled rings are forged under high temperature, the grain pattern in the metal is refined and this imparts greater strength and resistance to the metal which makes it more reliable in comparison to other components. Also these rings are developed at lower costs which make them a much more economical option.

Better Response to Heat: Unlike the other components, forgings are more predictable about how they would react to heat. When it comes to the other components, one needs to keep a close watch when applying to heat to make sure that the component does not melt of deform due to heat. But with forgings one can be sure of the maximum temperature it can handle.

Due to these advantages ring rolled forgings are used in a number of companies for their machineries and are also used in various components like bearing rings etc.
